General Motors, Firebird III, spaceship Concept Car, display at the Century 21 Exposition, Seattle World's Fair, 1962, 1960s
- This concept car was the third in the series of Firebird concept cars by General Motors. It used titanium skin, and included seven short wings and tail fins that were tested in a wind tunnel. It was powered by a 225 hp (168 kW) Whirlfire GT-305 gas turbine engine, and also utilized a 10 hp (7.5 kW) two cylinder gasoline engine to power all the accessories. It included amenities such as cruise control, air conditioning, and anti-lock brakes. There were special air drag brakes, like those found on aircraft, also an "ultra-sonic" key could remotely open the doors, along with an automated guidance system to avoid accidents and "no hold" steering. In between the two seats there was a joystick to steer the car. Many of these features might sound familiar today 65 years later.
Wheelbase: 3,023 mm (119 inches) Length: 6,304 mm (248.2 inches) Height: 1,138 mm (44.8 inches) (canopy top) Ground clearance: 135 mm (5.3 inches) Built: 1958
