- In 1948 the French launched their answer to the Volkswagen beetle with the Citroen 2CV. This unique looking car incorporated a tiny 2-cylinder engine in a VW Beetle-like design. Though it was inexpensive it had all-independent suspensions. The front and rear suspension were interconnected by horizontal coil springs so that when the front wheels meet a bump the rear wheels also rise.
From 1948 to 1990, nearly 4 million of the 2CV were built. In the 42 years of production it was second to the Volkswagen Beetle for the highest number of automobiles ever produced.
