1263, US Army XH-51A, Lockheed Experimental Jet Compound Helicopter, milestone of flight
- CN: 61-51263
First flight: 2/11/1962 Status: Retired Primary users: US Army, NASA Produced: 1962-1964 Number built: 3 Wing span: 4.9 meters (16.1 feet) Engines: 2,500 hp (1,864 kW) Pratt & Whitney J60-2 turbojet engine mounted on the left wing to increase performance This was the second XH-51A built and was subsequently converted by adding wings. The XH-51A first flew without powering up the turbojet on 21/09/1964, so that tests could be performed for aircraft balance and handling. XH-51A's first flight in a true compound configuration took place on 10/04/1965. On 29/11/1967 this experimental compound helicopter achieved a speed of 263 knots (486.9 km/h, 302.6 mph) in a shallow dive. The highest speed in level flight was a brisk 223 knots (413 km/h, 257 mph).
