Piazza del Campo (main square),
- Widely regarded as the finest Medieval square in Europe, the square hosts the famous Corsa del Palio, a fast and furious bareback horse race dating back to the 15th century. The Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall) at the top of the piazza was built between 1297 and 1310 as the seat of the Government of Nine, which ruled the city from 1287-1355, at the height of it's economic and cultural prosperity. The interior of the building, now the Civic Museum, contains paintings by Sienese masters Simone Martini and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, as well as the remains of the Gaia Fountain decorated by Jacopo della Quercia, a native. Next to the Palazzo Pubblico stands the Torre del Mangia (Mangia Tower), a 102m belltower.
