Church in the first liberated village of occupied france during World War II. During the war, American soldier John Steele was parachuted into the village, landed on the steeple, was shot several times in the legs by Nazi soldiers but was able to remain silent and survived. He was deafened by the church bells as a result of his ordeal. He remained a hero and repeated visitor to the village until his death in the early eighties. (home village of the photographer)
