Smeaton's Tower, a landmark on Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth, England
- This Tower was built from 1756 to 1759, and designed by John Smeaton. The architect used a very new design by adding dovetail joints to granite blocks, and then holding them together with quick drying cement that he also invented. The efficacy of this method made it a worldwide standard for lighthouse construction for many years to come.
After 127 years sitting on a reef, the lighthouse was removed because erosion began to wear away the stability of the platform. This being the fourth lighthouse constructed in Plymouth, the city decided to build yet a fifth lighthouse which still stands today. Upon completion of the fifth tower, the citizens raised enough money to deconstruct and reconstruct it on Plymouth Hoe where it can be seen to this day as this image shows. It stands as a tribute to Smeaton's inovations.
