This is a military cemetery and monument designed by Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky. It was created to honor 5000 of the 80000 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin in April through May 1945. It opened on May 8, 1949. In the cold war it served as the central war memorial of East Germany.
