USS Holland, Submarine Torpedo Boat # 1, 1900-1913
- In the year 1900, John Holland sold the United States Navy its first real submarine. It was named the USS Holland and had a robust speed of seven knots surfaced, made possible by her 45-horsepower internal combustion engine. This submarine could stay submerged for several hours when running on her rechargeable storage batteries.
The USS Holland was armed with a single torpedo tube and a pneumatic dynamite gun that fired through an opening in the bow. The USS Holland carried three torpedoes.
