Title:: Ryan, X-13 Vertijet, VTOL, milestone of flight, 1950s; The X-13 was built to test what is known as a VTOL for jet aircraft. After a vertical take-off this aircraft transitions to horizontal flight, then back to vertical flight for landing. On April 11, 1957 the X-13 completed its first full-cycle flight. It was to impractical for production.
