Northrop X-21A, milestone of flight
- First flight: 18 April 1963
Retired: 1968 Primary user: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Number built: 2
The Northrop X-21A was based on the Douglas WB-66D airframe (which was also in the US Navy as the A-3D Skywarrior). This aircraft was designed to test wings with laminar flow control. Installing tiny suction vents in the wing, this test offered a radical gain in fuel efficiency. Though it showed promise, it was to comple to be useful. After five years the program ended in 1968.
