Influenza virus, cross-section
- This image is a computer-generated rendering of a half-sliced influenza virus depicted with a gray surface membrane. The surface proteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), are depicted in dark and light blue. The interior of this virus shows the ribonucleoproteins (RNPs). You can see their coiled structures, and three-bulbed polymerase complex at the ends of the coils.
An influenza virus? RNP (ribonucleoproteins) are composed of both protien and RNA. Each influenza virus is composed of eight RNP segments that directly relate to the virus? eight total gene segments. Three of these RNP parts encode the surface proteins of this virus. Illustrated by: Dan Higgins - CDC
