Coral Reef Island, Le Phare Amedee, Amedee Island, New Caledonia, entrance to the passage of Boulari
- This is a remarkable lighthouse on a tiny coral island in New Caledonia in the South Pacific. This lighthouse is made of Iron and was the first metallic lighthouse constructed in France. This lighthouse was built by French engineer M. Rigolet in 1862. It was constructed in Paris and then disassembled into 1,265 pieces for transhipment to New Caledonia. At 56 meters tall (247 steps), it is the second tallest lighthouse in the world. It's beacon was first lit on 15 November 1865.
I rented a helicopter to get this image and I must say it was one of the most amazing flights I have experienced. We landed on the beach and I spent a few hours there. Upon take off we came across many grounded ships and even a yacht that had just grounded in the shallow corals a few hours before. Waves were breaking seemingly in the middle of the ocean. It was a combination of fear, amazement, and introspection that I felt at this time. This is one of the wonders of the world.
