Bristlecone Pines State Park, (Pinus longaeva)
- On an obscure mountain in Central California reside the world's oldest living inhabitants. The Bristlecone Pine is a remarkable gnarled and twisted species of pine tree that lives in the White Mountains along east central California at the 10,000-11,000 foot level. This part of the White Mountains is situated in such a way that these trees are exposed to a constant barrage of bitter cold and arid biting winds. This harsh exposure to the elements creates an artistic panoply of twisted trunks and limbs that are mostly dead.
When I walk amidst this sparse forest, a sense of awe envelopes my entire being. To think that some of these trees are over 3000 years old (one tree is over 5000 years old). In their quiet wisdom and graceful majesty they stand in these xeric conditions, it inculcates an existential reverence of my place into the vast unknown.
