The fare is $8.00 one way and $9.00 round trip, Originally this railway was built in 1895 to compete with an earlier incline (built in 1886) which later closed. In those days it was a privately run operation but now is operated by the Chattanooga Area Regional Transit Authority. The length of the rail tracks is around 4800 feet with a rise of 1450 feet, making it the longest and steepest funicular in the U.S. The grade varies and reaches a maximum of 72.7% near the top. The ride is 15 minutes each way. Keep in mind that this is a historical image as the Lookout Mountain Incline railway now uses new equipment.
