- This dam is situated on the Euphrates River in southeastern Turkey. It is the main structure of the Southeastern Anatolia Project. It was finished in 1990 with an embankment 184 m (604 feet) high and 1,820 m (5,971 feet) long. This project is one of the world?s largest earth-and-rock fill dams.
The water that is held back is used for generating 2,400 megawatts of electrical power. After the generators the water is then channeled to the huge network of irrigation channels in the Harran Plain and to many other places nearby.
