- This is one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world. The Arapaima uses a labyrinth organ for respiration. This is an organ thick with blood vessels which opens into the fishes mouth. This gives the Arapaima great advantage in oxygen deprived waters as this fish is actually an air-breather.
