Martyr billboard, Tehran
- During the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), larger than life billboards and posters of Khomeini and the so-called martyrs of the war sprouted up by the thousands all over the country. The handmade paintings often depict scenes of war in which bloody rivers lead to peaceful sunsets where the Supreme Leader looms. After the death of Khomeini, newer billboards included the figure of his successor, Khamenei (always smaller than Khomeini).
