This remarkable cathedral can be seen from far. There are around 300 steps to the observation walkway at the base of the cathedral?s dome and here you can take in the breathtaking views from the base of the dome.
This huge building was designed by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand and took 40 years to build between 1818-1858. The massive columns are made of single pieces of red granite and weigh 80 tons each. Once inside you can see the decorative 8 malachite and 2 lapis lazuli columns. The cathedral could accommodate 14,000 worshipers, but it now serves as a museum and services are held only on significant ecclesiastical holidays.
