This newt can reach a length of 6.4 to 14 cm (2.5 to 5.5 inches). It feeds on insects, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, other small invertebrates, and tadpoles. Their skin secrets a toxin that keeps other fish from eating them. Adults breed in late winter and early spring.
