This iconic geoform rises 550 meters above the high-desert in the four corners region of New-Mexico. Because from a distance it appears to be a ship, it was named Shiprock. The Navajos call it Tse? Bit'a'?, "rock with wings" or "winged rock".

Radiometric dating shows the age of this formation to have been created 27 million years ago. Erosion has left this formation which was the "throat" of a volcano.

Prominence: 482 meters (1,583 feet)
