Title:
Eastern Newt, (Notophthalmus viridescens), Salamandridae, Salamander
This newt can reach a length of 6.4 to 14 cm (2.5 to 5.5 inches). It feeds on insects, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, other small invertebrates, and tadpoles. Their skin secrets a toxin that keeps other fish from eating them. Adults breed in late winter and early spring. These newts transition in three stages of life: the aquatic stage, the terrestrial juvenile stage, and the aquatic adult. In the aquatic stage the larva do possess gills which allows them to not leave the pond environment where it was hatched.
