This huge control tower required a careful slender design that needed to resist both wind and seismic forces. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to create the safe proportions of this structure. You can notice the distinctive chamfered corners of the tall shaft that are designed to reduce the vortices created by the action of wind. It is situated between 2 underground passenger tunnels, which required the engineers to coordinate the tower?s foundation with the tunnels location on both sides. When designed, this was the tallest control tower in North America.
