This nebula is named after its resemblance to a coiling spiral seen from the top. The Helix Nebula is composed of gaseous shells that are expanding by a sun-like star at the end of its existence. At around 700 light years of distance it is very close to us by astronomical distances. The Helix Nebula is sometimes referred to as the "Eye of God" in pop culture.
