Antioch Bridge
The Antioch Bridge is 2877.1 meters (1.8 miles) long, and was built in 1978 to replace the previous bridge originaly constructed in 1926. It is a steel plate girder type bridge and spans the San Joaquin River for 460 feet with a veritcal clearance of 135 feet. It bridges the gap from Antioch in northeastern Contra Costa County, to Sacramento County.
Along with the Dumbarton Bridge to the south, The Antioch Bridge is the only other state-owned bridge that currently has both bicycle and pedestrian access.
You can see this graceful arch from afar, and the anticipation of driving this tower free span always makes my heart thump just a tad faster. Once on it, it almost feels like you are flying low like your in an airplane. But soon it always gives you a gentle landing on the other side. This bridge is part of California State Highway 160.
