In 1979, the Shah of Iran flew out of Tehran for the last time, taking his wife, Empress Farah, retainers, and a handful of soil from his country. He reached Cairo after eighteen months of wandering in which he was turned down from country to country in search of a refuge. The Shah died on July 27th, 1980 and was buried here. Engraved in the stone beneath the royal insignia in Farsi: Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Shahanshah (King of Kings) of Iran.
