United Airlines UAL, Boeing 737, Windows
I was in Santa Barbara and we were waiting for clearance for take-off to SFO. SFO was fogged in and so for several hours we waited. In my desire to make the best of it, I had my Nikon FE with a 24 mm f2.8 lens. I had also acquired one of those tiny mini tripods that also had a velcro strap so you could attach it to a railing or anything with that diameter. This lady was in first class reading and of course had no idea i was able to make an image like this. I attached the camera onto this "strap-pod" and proceeded to make some exposures with this precarious set up. It was wobbely but i had zero wind, and with the self timer I was able to take this picture.
Knowing my shooting style and seeing some motion in the lady, I would guess an f-stop of around 8 and an exposure of around 10 seconds. She was relativly still reading her magazine. You can see the wiggly light in the background that is an airport vehicle obviously not going fast. It would have taken at least ten seconds or longer for it to subtend that arc within this image. I took a manual reading for the interior of the cabin for the ambient light and then relied on flash for the exterior light. The clean well exposed exterior is simply from a hand held flash set in auto for the correct exposure for the given f-stop which again im pretty sure was f-8. A good combo of ambient light and flash perfectly juxtaposed i would say. I ended up shooting a whole role at this time. I remember the captain making comments and laughing. At one point he just said "I thought I've seen everything" and chuckled. I turned a very boring time into a magical experience. If intrested I can show you all more of some of these images from this moment, though this one is my fave.
