Top smelt, silverside, (Atherinops affinis), Atheriniformes, Atherinopsidae, atherinids
- The top smelt is a schooling fish found along sandy beaches around rocky reefs, kelp beds, and piers from Vancouver Island to the Gulf of California. I took these pictures at Morro Bay in central California.
The top smelt is not a true smelt, it is a member of the silverside family which includes grunion. Atherinops affinis grows up to 14 1/2 inches.
