Soda Lake near the Temblor Range, water
I fly between LA and SF many times. One of the highlights for me is always to look for my beloved Soda Lake in the Carizo Plain adajacent to the Temblor Range. I always feel vindicated when i get to see this stunning patch of bright soda twisting its free willed shape against the earth. I love to drive by it on the ground also and contrast the relationship between the two perspectives. You can see this on this website.
This large basin is all that remains of a prehistoric sea. This is one of the largest undisturbed alkali wetlands in the state. This 3,000 acre lake provides important habitat for migratory birds, including a quarter of the state's wintering sandhill crane population. With no outlet, the water evaporates, leaving behind a glistening expanse of pure white sodium sulfate and carbonate.
