This aircraft is now the 747SP SOFIA airborne astronomical observatory, a joint effort of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to fly an infrared telescope at 40,000 feet altitude. This airborne observatory has a 2.5 meter (8.2 feet) diameter reflecting telescope and is the biggest telescope ever to fly in the air. SOFIA is the successor to the NASA C-141 Kuiper Airborne Observatory.
