- The M2-F1, was the lightweight prototype of the lifting body series of research aircraft, It was unpowered and was towed into the air and then released to prove the lifting body concept that was conceived around 1957 by Dr. Alfred J. Eggers Jr., then the assistant director for Research and Development Analysis and Planning at the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, now the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif.
