Title:
N416US, Boeing 737-401, US Air flight 5050, La Guardia Airport, September 20, 1989, 737-400 series, CFM56-3B2, CFM56, 1980s
At take-off a Boeing 737-401 series airplane plunged off the end of the runway, flew about 100 feet and then belly flopped into Rikers Island Channel.

The water was 25 to 40 feet deep, but the jet aircraft did not sink; instead, its nose came to rest on a long trestle holding landing-approach lights, and the aircraft broke in two, with only its wings and part of the fuselage under water, enabling nearly everyone aboard to be rescued. One person was killed and 45 others were injured, only one seriously.
