Al Azhar University, Cairo
- The Al Azhar mosque was founded together with the city in 358 AH / 969 SD. The mosque was completed in nearly two years and opened 972 AD. Since then it has become the most famous mosque in the Muslim World and the oldest university ever for both religious and secular studies. During the Fatimid period, Al-Azhar was an essential part of Arab and Muslim intellectual life.
