Lord Nelson Monument, Trafalgar Square, London, England, United Kingdom
- This 46 m (151 feet) column was built to honor the death of Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It was constructed in the years between 1840 and 1843. The column is topped off with a 5.5 m (18 feet) statue of the admiral. It points south toward the Admiralty and Portsmouth where the flagship HMS Victory is located. The mall is to his right where his ships are honored on each top of the flagpole.
The column itself is made of granite in the Corinthian style of architecture. It is inspired by the Temple of Mars Ultor in Rome. At the top there is a square pedestal that is decorated with four bronze panels that were cast from French Canons that were captured during battle. The four bronze panels represent Horatio's four victories. William Railton designed this monument in 1838, and was constructed by the company Peto & Grissell. Topping the whole piece is a statue of Nelson that was sculpted by a member of the Royal Academy, E.H. Baily. after an almost 25 year delay, four lions were added at the base. They were done by Sir Edwin Landseer in 1867.
