Title:
Monte Saint Michel, Normandy
The Mont Saint Michel (in English, Saint Michael's Mount) was a trading, becoming a port by the Iron Age. It is thought that the Mount was the island of 'Ictis' where the Greeks traded for tin, in fact Diodorus gives an account of the inhabitants of Belerion, tin streaming and the way the streamers used wagons to carry the minerals across to the island of Ictis, during the ebb of the tide, when the intervening space is left dry, to trade with the waiting merchants. Edward the Confessor founded a chapel on the Mount in 1044 in a grant to the Benedictine Abbey of Mont Saint Michael in Brittany - Edward spent much of his youth in Normandy and was influenced by the Norman monks.

Following the Norman Conquest of 1066 much of the west of England was given by William the Conqueror to the Count of Mortain, upon whom he bestowed the title 'Earl of Cornwall'. Robert, granted St Michaels Mount to the Norman Abbey of Mont Saint Michael. The first priory was established in 1135 by Bernard of Le Bec. The location of the Mount made it an ideal fortress. During the 12th century, the Mount was seized and held as a fortress by a group of his brother John's supporters. The buildings later returned to their use, but they were to be used as fortresses in the Wars of the Roses and the Cornish Rebellion against Edward VI.

The last occasion the mount was used was in 1646 during the English Civil war. The Mount was held shortly by Royalist supporters, but was forced to capitulate to the Parliamentarians in 1646. The Mount was bought by Sir John St Aubyn during 1660 and has, since then, had a peaceful existence. The House was used by the St Aubyn family as an occasional residence - mainly during the summer months. During the 18th century the family established a permanent residence , building a new wing with impressive Victorian apartments, decorated with fine plaster relief and furnished with fine examples of Chippendale. The Mount also contains collections of paintings and armour. The St Aubyn family retained ownership of St Michael's Mount until 1964 when the property was given to the National Trust by the 3rd Lord St Levan. ; in fact Diodorus gives an account of the inhabitants of Belerion, tin streaming and the way the streamers used wagons to carry the minerals across to the island of Ictis
