A large bird (about 94 cm) found in Africa south of the Sahara and Madagascar. In southern Africa it is an uncommon to locally common intra African migrant with some birds resident, and is found in the wetter north and eastern regions. It is found on the larger inland waters. The main food is snails and molluscs and the bill is adapted for grasping mollusc shells.
