Title:
Temppeliaukio Kirkko, Rock Church, Helsinki
This remarkable sacred place was designed by the two architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. They selected a rocky outcrop rising over 12 meters above street level, and blasted out the walls from the inside. The underground Rock Church is built inside a massive block of natural granite. The structure is barely visible from outside, with only the copper dome peaking out of the rock.

The interior is circular in shape and is enclosed by walls of exposed bare granite. The ceiling is a giant upside down saucer made of copper wire. The interior light is natural, and filters through 180 vertical window panes supporting the dome. Experiencing this place gave me a soothing sense of peace, stillness, and quietude. A must see if you ever are in Helsinki.
