- In the 12th century Emperor Lalibela (1185-1225) issued the building of 11 rock-hewn churches. The churches are a museum of sacred architecture. What sets these structures apart are its amazing features: chiseled-out entryways, courtyards, and interiors, and rich geometric decorations. The Emperor recruited craftsmen from as far away as the Holy Land.
