Notes: In the center of the Marv Dasht basin, Cyrus the Great chose to build a palace worthy of his Empire. The ancient Persians named it Parsa, but later But under subsequent Greek influence it became translated as Persepolis, "The city of the Persians".

Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire during the Achaemenid dynasty. Persepolis is located 70 km northeast of Shiraz. In contemporary Persian, the site is known as Takht-e Jamshid (Throne of Jamshid) and Parseh.

It now is a magnificent site of ruins that are relatively well preserved. Signage and markers give the visitor a good overview of the significant structures. In 1979 Persopolis was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
